Cutler Bay, FL, named after Dr. William Cutler, who encouraged settlement in the area around 1880, has evolved from a pioneer community into the town we know today. Originally known as Cutler Ridge, the area was referred to as the “Hunting Ground” by early settlers and has a rich archaeological history, including the nearby Charles Deering Estate’s Cutler Fossil Site, which showcases fossils of mammoths and saber-toothed tigers and evidence of Native American habitation dating back 10,000 years.

In the early 20th century, the extension of the Florida East Coast Railway to Cutler catalyzed its development as a key supply point for settlers in the Homestead area. The town’s transformation continued into the 21st century, particularly after the devastation of Hurricane Andrew, which prompted local leaders to consider formal incorporation to better manage recovery and growth. This led to the formation of the Cutler Bay Steering Committee in 2002, which played a pivotal role in establishing Cutler Bay as an incorporated municipality in 2005, following a community vote that favored “Cutler Bay” over “Cutler Ridge” as the new name. Today, Cutler Bay stands as Miami-Dade County’s 35th municipality, known for its deep historical roots and vibrant community spirit.
