South Miami, affectionately known as the “City of Pleasant Living,” boasts a rich history rooted in pioneering spirit and resilience. The journey of South Miami began in the late 19th century when W.A. Larkins established a dairy and post office in the wilderness of South Dade, leading to the foundation of a community that thrived alongside the expansion of the Florida East Coast Railroad. By the roaring 1920s, the area, known for its booming real estate, expressed a strong desire for incorporation, culminating in its official establishment as the Town of South Miami in 1926, and later transitioning to a city in 1927 following a devastating hurricane and a battle for recognition and survival. Throughout the 1930s, South Miami faced significant challenges, including financial turmoil and efforts to dissolve the city, only to emerge stronger with a determined community at its core. Post-World War II, the city experienced rapid growth, leading to a reevaluation of its governance structure and the adoption of a city manager-commission government in 1953. Today, South Miami is celebrated for its unique small-town atmosphere, a testament to its enduring charm and the vision of its early settlers, while continuing to grow and evolve as a vibrant part of the Miami metropolitan area.
