Kendall, FL, has a rich history that dates back to 1883 when the Florida Land and Mortgage Company, directed by Henry John Broughton Kendall, purchased large tracts of land from the State of Florida. Kendall was named after Henry Kendall, who moved to the area in the early 1900s to oversee the company’s land developments. Initially, development was slow, as the land was unavailable for homesteading. The area saw the establishment of a post office in 1914 and its first school in 1929, but growth was stagnant until the mid-20th century.
Historically, the name “Kendall” referred to a region centered around U.S. Route 1, encompassing areas from Snapper Creek to the north, the Everglades to the west, Old Cutler Road to the east, and down to the former community of Rockdale to the south. This area was characterized by its pine rockland and interspersed agricultural fields. The landscape began to change significantly in the 1950s with rapid development, leading to the expansion of what is now considered Kendall. The term began to encompass newly developed communities near today’s Pinecrest and what is formally known as West Kendall. As the suburban sprawl continued westward through the 1970s to the 1990s, Kendall grew into the bustling community it is today, known for its vibrant neighborhoods and commercial centers, marking a significant shift from its earlier, more rural characteristics.
